E-commerce buyer's guide

What is E-commerce software?
E-commerce software is the set of tools a business uses to sell online: a store platform for product pages, cart and checkout, plus apps for payments, shipping, marketing, reviews and marketplace sales. Hosted platforms like Shopify run the servers and security for a monthly fee, while open-source options like WooCommerce and Medusa give full control in exchange for more technical work.
It solves the core problems of selling online: presenting products, taking payments securely, managing stock and orders, calculating shipping and tax, and bringing customers back. Small brands, creators selling digital products, retailers adding online sales and enterprises running several storefronts all need a version of it.
The category covers the store and the tools around it. Creator storefronts like Gumroad and Stan focus on digital products, multichannel tools like Linnworks and Entegra sync orders across marketplaces, and Klaviyo and Omnisend handle email and SMS retention.
Key features to look for
- Checkout and payment options
- Checkout is where most sales are won or lost. Check supported gateways, local cards and instalments, digital wallets and whether the platform adds its own transaction fee on top of the gateway's.
- Inventory and order management
- Real-time stock across your store, marketplaces and physical shop prevents overselling. Look for variant handling, low-stock alerts and bulk editing.
- Marketplace integrations
- Selling on Amazon, Trendyol or Hepsiburada next to your own store requires synced listings, stock and orders. Linnworks, Entegra and Sentos specialise in this.
- Shipping and returns
- Carrier integrations, label printing, tracking pages and a simple returns flow reduce support tickets. AfterShip adds branded tracking and returns on top of most platforms.
- SEO and site speed
- Clean URLs, editable meta tags, structured data and fast mobile pages decide how much free traffic you get from search. Test theme speed on a phone, not only on desktop.
- Marketing and retention tools
- Email and SMS flows, discount codes, reviews and referral programmes turn one-time buyers into repeat customers. Klaviyo, Omnisend, Yotpo and ReferralCandy plug into the main platforms.
- App ecosystem and API
- No platform does everything out of the box, so the quality of its app store and API decides how far you can grow without re-platforming.
How to choose E-commerce software
- 1
Define what and where you sell
Physical goods, digital downloads, subscriptions and B2B orders each favour different platforms. Decide early whether marketplaces and social selling are part of the plan.
- 2
Choose hosted or open source
Hosted platforms like Shopify, Wix or ikas are fastest to launch. WooCommerce or Medusa suit teams with developers who want full control over code and hosting.
- 3
Check local payments and shipping
Confirm that the gateways, instalment options and carriers your customers expect are supported natively, not only through a fragile third-party app.
- 4
Calculate the total cost
Add subscription, transaction fees, payment processing, paid apps and theme costs for your expected order volume. Two platforms with similar plan prices can differ a lot in total.
- 5
Test the admin, not the demo store
Add products, place a test order and issue a refund. The daily admin experience matters more than the theme gallery.
- 6
Plan for a future migration
Check product, customer and order export options and keep your own domain, so you can change platform later without losing search rankings.
E-commerce pricing
- 33%
- offer a free plan, free tier or open-source edition
- $29
- median starting price per month
- $5
- lowest paid starting price (Ecwid by Lightspeed)
Hosted store platforms charge a monthly subscription in tiers, and the tiers mostly change transaction fees, staff accounts, reporting and B2B or international features. On top come payment processing fees, paid apps, a premium theme and sometimes an extra platform fee when you use an outside gateway, as Shopify charges. Creator platforms differ: Gumroad takes a share of each sale instead of a monthly fee, and Payhip mixes plans with transaction fees.
Open-source WooCommerce and Medusa have no licence fee, but hosting, development, security and paid extensions add up. Turkish platforms such as Ticimax, İdeasoft and T-Soft usually sell annual packages with setup and integration add-ons. Klaviyo and Omnisend price by contacts or profiles, so cost grows with your list.

Recommendations by team type
- Creators and solo sellers
- Gumroad, Payhip, Stan and Fourthwall let you sell digital products, courses or merch without running a full store. In Turkey, Shopier is a quick way to take payments through social media.
- Small businesses
- Shopify, Wix and Squarespace are easy to launch and maintain, and Ecwid by Lightspeed adds a store to an existing site. Turkish sellers often choose ikas, Ticimax or İdeasoft for built-in local payments, cargo and e-invoicing.
- Growing brands
- Add Klaviyo or Omnisend for retention, Yotpo for reviews, Gorgias for support and Entegra, Sentos or Linnworks for marketplace orders. Segmentify and Prisync help with personalisation and competitive pricing.
- Enterprises
- BigCommerce, Shopify's enterprise plan, Akinon and Medusa handle high volume, multiple storefronts and headless builds. ShipBob can take over fulfilment for international sales when warehousing becomes a bottleneck.
E-commerce trends in 2026
AI shopping agents are the biggest shift. In 2025 OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in ChatGPT on an open Agentic Commerce Protocol, with Etsy and Shopify merchants among the first partners, and Google announced its Agent Payments Protocol. Clean product data, structured markup and reviews now matter for visibility in AI answers as well as classic search, and platforms ship built-in AI for descriptions, images and store setup, such as Shopify's Sidekick.
Selling to the US got harder after the de minimis duty exemption for low-value parcels ended in August 2025, pushing cross-border sellers to rethink pricing and fulfilment.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing a platform on monthly price alone and ignoring transaction fees, payment processing and paid apps.
- Launching without testing the full checkout on a phone with real cards, instalments and shipping options.
- Changing platform or URL structure without 301 redirects, which wipes out search rankings built over years.
- Selling on several marketplaces with manual stock updates, which leads to overselling and marketplace penalties.
- Skipping legal basics such as distance-selling terms, a returns policy and cookie consent before launch.
E-commerce in Turkey
Turkey has its own e-commerce stack. Stripe does not onboard Turkish companies and Shopify Payments is unavailable, so stores rely on iyzico, PayTR or bank virtual POS with instalments, which ikas, Ticimax, İdeasoft, T-Soft and Faprika support out of the box. Sellers must issue e-Fatura or e-Arşiv invoices, register with ETBİS, follow distance-selling rules and get İYS consent for marketing messages. Entegra and Sentos sync orders with Trendyol, Hepsiburada and other marketplaces.

- Yes. 3 tools in this category are free or open source, including Gumroad, Medusa, WooCommerce.

- Ecwid by Lightspeed has the lowest listed starting price at $5.00 per month.
- What is the best e-commerce platform for small businesses?
- Shopify is the most complete hosted option for most small businesses, with a large app store and simple admin. Wix and Squarespace suit design-led sites with smaller catalogues, and WooCommerce fits if you already run WordPress. In Turkey, ikas, Ticimax and İdeasoft include local payments and e-invoicing.
- How much does it cost to open an online store?
- The platform subscription is only part of it: add payment processing fees, a domain, a theme, paid apps and possibly a platform transaction fee. Open-source WooCommerce has no licence fee but needs hosting and maintenance. Current starting prices for each platform are listed on this page.
- Shopify vs WooCommerce: which is better?
- Shopify is hosted, so security, updates and speed are handled for you in exchange for a monthly fee and app subscriptions. WooCommerce is free and open source on WordPress and gives full control, but you manage hosting, updates and plugin conflicts. Non-technical teams usually move faster with Shopify.
- Can I use Shopify in Turkey?
- Yes, you can run a Shopify store from Turkey, but Shopify Payments is not available, so you connect a third-party gateway such as iyzico and Shopify adds its own fee on those orders. Turkish e-invoicing and cargo integrations also need apps, which is why many local brands choose ikas or Ticimax.
- What is the best way to sell digital products?
- Gumroad, Payhip, Sellfy and Stan are built for digital downloads, courses and memberships and handle file delivery for you. Gumroad has no monthly fee but takes a share of each sale, while the others offer plans with lower or no transaction fees. Check how each one handles VAT on digital sales.
- Do I need marketplace integration software?
- If you sell on two or more marketplaces alongside your own store, yes. Entegra, Sentos and Linnworks sync stock, prices and orders so you do not oversell, and the Turkish tools also handle e-invoices. If you sell on a single channel, your platform's built-in tools are usually enough.
