What is Data integration & ETL software?
Data integration and ETL software moves data from source systems such as SaaS apps, databases, ad platforms and event streams into a destination, usually a cloud data warehouse, and transforms it into a usable shape. ETL transforms data before loading, ELT loads raw data first and transforms it inside the warehouse with tools such as dbt, and reverse ETL sends modelled data back into business tools.
It replaces fragile scripts and manual CSV exports with managed connectors that handle API changes, schema drift, incremental syncs and retries. Data engineers, analytics engineers and, more and more, marketing and operations teams use it to build one source of truth for reporting, AI and automation.
It differs from workflow automation tools, which trigger actions between apps one record at a time, and from BI tools, which visualise data after it lands. Customer data platforms such as Twilio Segment and RudderStack overlap by collecting event data and routing it to many destinations.
Key features to look for
- Connector coverage and quality
- Count connectors for your exact sources, but also check whether the vendor or the community maintains them. Fivetran and Airbyte lead on breadth, and quality varies by connector.
- Incremental sync and CDC
- Change data capture reads database logs so only new or changed rows move. Estuary Flow, Fivetran and Airbyte support it, which lowers cost and load on the source.
- Schema drift handling
- Sources add and rename fields all the time. Good tools detect changes, update destination tables and alert you instead of failing silently.
- In-warehouse transformation
- SQL modelling with dbt, or built-in transformations in Matillion and Hevo, turns raw tables into clean business models. Check version control and testing support.
- Reverse ETL and activation
- Hightouch and Census push warehouse data into CRMs, ad platforms and support tools, so every team acts on the same numbers. Check sync frequency and destination limits.
- Monitoring and alerting
- Pipeline failures should reach Slack or email with clear error messages. Look for freshness checks, logs and retry controls.
- Deployment and security options
- Some teams need self-hosting, private networking or a specific data region. Airbyte and Windmill can be self-hosted; check SOC 2, encryption and how credentials are stored.
How to choose Data integration & ETL software
- 1
Inventory sources and destinations
List every source, its data volume and how fresh the data must be. Match this against vendor connector lists before anything else.
- 2
Choose ETL, ELT or reverse ETL
Most modern stacks use ELT into a warehouse plus dbt for modelling. Add reverse ETL only when business teams need warehouse data inside their own tools.
- 3
Estimate volume and cost
Ask each vendor to price your real row counts or data volume and model a year of growth. Usage-based bills can jump after a full historical resync.
- 4
Decide managed or self-hosted
Managed tools save engineering time; open-source Airbyte or Windmill save licence fees and keep data in your network. Be honest about who will maintain it.
- 5
Test your hardest connector
Run the proof of concept on your most complex source, not the easiest one. Check sync time, errors and how deletes are handled.
- 6
Check the non-engineer path
If marketers only need data in Sheets or Looker Studio, Supermetrics or Coupler.io may be faster and cheaper than a full warehouse pipeline.
Data integration & ETL pricing
- 75%
- offer a free plan, free tier or open-source edition
- $100
- median starting price per month
- $10
- lowest paid starting price (Windmill)
Data integration pricing is mostly usage-based. Fivetran charges on monthly active rows, Airbyte Cloud and Hevo price on data volume or credits, Twilio Segment and RudderStack price on events or tracked users, and dbt charges per developer seat with run limits. Marketing-focused tools such as Supermetrics and Coupler.io price by data sources, destinations and refresh frequency.
Hidden costs come from initial historical loads, resyncs after schema changes, high-frequency syncs and the warehouse compute you pay separately to Snowflake, BigQuery or Databricks. Open-source Airbyte and Windmill remove licence fees but add hosting and maintenance. Enterprise platforms such as Boomi and Matillion usually quote annual contracts.

- Scale-ups with data teams
- Fivetran or Hevo for ingestion, Estuary Flow for real-time CDC, dbt for modelling and Hightouch or Census for reverse ETL cover most needs, with RudderStack or Twilio Segment for event data.
- Enterprises
- Boomi and Matillion fit hybrid integration and governed cloud ELT, while Windmill helps engineering teams build internal data workflows in code.
Data integration & ETL trends in 2026
Consolidation reshaped the market in 2025: Fivetran acquired Census to add reverse ETL and then merged with dbt Labs (announced in October 2025, completed in 2026), bringing ingestion and transformation under one company. Open table formats such as Apache Iceberg are becoming common destinations, letting teams keep data in their own storage and query it with several engines.
AI is changing both how pipelines are built and why. Matillion with Maia and Airbyte with its AI connector builder generate pipelines and connectors, and many tools now feed unstructured data and vector stores for AI applications. Real-time CDC is moving from niche to standard as AI agents need fresh data.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Picking a tool by connector count without testing the one or two sources that matter most.
- Syncing every table and column at maximum frequency and paying for data nobody uses.
- Skipping the transformation layer and letting every analyst define revenue or active users differently.
- Ignoring pipeline monitoring until a dashboard shows wrong numbers in a board meeting.
- Loading personal data into a warehouse abroad without checking privacy rules and access controls.
Data integration & ETL in Turkey
Most connectors do not cover Turkish systems such as Logo, Mikro or Netsis ERPs, Paraşüt, e-Fatura integrators or marketplaces like Trendyol and Hepsiburada, so plan custom connectors with Airbyte's builder or Windmill scripts. Moving personal data to a warehouse outside Türkiye is a cross-border transfer under KVKK, which since June 2024 usually means standard contracts that must be notified to the Authority. Self-hosting keeps data local, and nearly all vendors bill in USD.
Data integration & ETL FAQ
- What is the best Data integration & ETL software?
- Based on community votes and market presence, the leading Data integration & ETL tools right now are Fivetran, Airbyte, Twilio Segment.
- Are there free Data integration & ETL tools?
- Yes. 2 tools in this category are free or open source, including Airbyte, Windmill.
- What is the cheapest paid Data integration & ETL tool?
- Windmill has the lowest listed starting price at $10.00 per month.
- What is the difference between ETL and ELT?
- ETL transforms data before loading it into the destination, while ELT loads raw data first and transforms it inside the warehouse. ELT became the default with cloud warehouses because storage and compute are cheap; tools such as Fivetran or Airbyte load the data and dbt handles transformation.
- What is the best open-source ETL tool?
- Airbyte is the most widely used open-source data movement tool, with hundreds of connectors and a connector builder. dbt Core is the open-source standard for SQL transformations, and Windmill is open source for script-based workflows. All can be self-hosted, but you take on the maintenance.
- Fivetran vs Airbyte: which should I use?
- Fivetran is a fully managed service known for reliable, low-maintenance connectors and charges on monthly active rows. Airbyte offers open-source self-hosting plus a cloud service with volume or capacity-based pricing, and is often cheaper at scale. Teams with little engineering time usually choose Fivetran.
- What is reverse ETL?
- Reverse ETL copies modelled data from your warehouse back into operational tools such as CRMs, ad platforms and support desks. Hightouch and Census are the best-known tools; they let sales and marketing work with the same customer metrics the data team uses.
- How much does an ETL tool cost?
- Small teams can start free with open-source Airbyte, dbt Core or the free tiers of Fivetran and Hevo. Paid plans grow with rows, data volume or events, and enterprise platforms use annual contracts. Remember to add warehouse compute costs; this page lists current starting prices.
- Do I need a data warehouse to use these tools?
- Most ELT tools such as Fivetran, Airbyte and Stitch are designed to load into a warehouse or data lake. If you only need marketing data in spreadsheets or dashboards, Supermetrics and Coupler.io can send it straight to Google Sheets or Looker Studio without one.
