RudderStack

Warehouse-native customer data pipelines, a Segment alternative

RudderStack is a data integration & ETL tool for Developers and Small businesses, offered as freemium ($265/mo). Founded in United States in 2019.

About RudderStack

RudderStack is a customer data infrastructure company founded in 2019 by Soumyadeb Mitra and based in San Francisco. It positions itself as a warehouse-native alternative to Segment: instead of keeping customer data in its own black box, it collects events and sends them to your data warehouse and downstream tools, so Snowflake, BigQuery or Databricks becomes the source of truth. The core data plane, rudder-server, is source-available on GitHub under the Elastic License 2.0.

The platform covers event streaming from web, mobile and server SDKs, 200+ cloud destinations, warehouse loading, reverse ETL from the warehouse back into tools, JavaScript and Python transformations, tracking plans for data quality, consent management, and Profiles for identity resolution and customer 360 tables. Pricing is based on monthly event volume: a free tier covers 250K events, Growth starts at $265 per month for 1M events, and Enterprise adds faster sync, Profiles, HIPAA and VPC deployment.

It fits engineering and data teams that already run a cloud warehouse and want control over schemas, privacy and cost. Segment is easier for marketers and has a larger catalog, and Hightouch and Census are stronger if you only need reverse ETL. RudderStack needs more technical ownership than Segment.

At Snowflake Summit in June 2026 RudderStack launched RudderAI, a set of agents, MCP tools and a CLI that audit tracking, debug pipelines, build customer profiles, answer analytics questions without SQL and activate audiences, usable from Slack and Claude.

Key features of RudderStack

  • Event stream SDKs for web, iOS, Android and server languages
  • Over 200 cloud destinations plus warehouse and data lake loading
  • Reverse ETL that syncs warehouse tables back to SaaS tools
  • JavaScript and Python transformations on events in flight
  • Tracking plans that validate event schemas and catch bad data
  • Profiles for identity resolution and customer 360 tables in the warehouse
  • Consent management integrations for GDPR and CCPA compliance
  • RudderAI agents, MCP tools and CLI for pipeline and analytics work

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Warehouse-first design keeps customer data in your own infrastructure
  • Generous free tier of 250K events per month
  • Event-based pricing usually undercuts Segment at similar volumes
  • Source-available core server for teams that want to inspect or self-host

Cons

  • Needs engineering ownership; less marketer-friendly than Segment
  • Profiles, HIPAA and VPC deployment are Enterprise-only
  • Elastic License 2.0 is not an OSI open-source license
  • Costs rise quickly with high event volumes on Growth
