XWiki

Open-source enterprise wiki, self-hosted or cloud, now with MCP

XWiki is a note-taking & docs tool for Enterprise and Small businesses, offered as open source. Based in France, founded in 2004. Popular alternatives include Obsidian, AppFlowy, Notion.

About XWiki

XWiki is an open-source knowledge management platform for team wikis, documentation, intranets and knowledge bases. It is built by XWiki SAS, a Paris company founded in 2004 by CEO Ludovic Dubost, owned by its employees and run without outside investors. The core is published under LGPL 2.1, so you can self-host it for free or pay XWiki SAS for cloud hosting and support.

The wiki covers page hierarchies, templates, forms and structured data, real-time co-editing, comments, unlimited version history, granular rights and search across pages and attachments. Over 900 extensions and paid Pro Apps add diagrams, office editing through OnlyOffice or Collabora, calendars and tasks. Paid plans, from Starter to Enterprise, are priced in euros per year by user count, cost the same in cloud or on premises, and add Pro Apps, SSO, IP allowlisting, migration tools and faster support.

XWiki fits organisations that want to own their knowledge, need on-premises or EU hosting, or are leaving Confluence. Confluence has a smoother cloud editor and Jira ties, Outline is lighter and faster for small teams, and Notion is more flexible for docs plus databases. XWiki asks more admin effort, and the Starter plan is cloud-only and capped at 25 users.

On October 30, 2026 XWiki launched its MCP Server on Product Hunt and finished #4 of the day. The free, open-source extension lets agents such as Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode search the wiki, answer questions and create or edit pages, using any LLM provider or a self-hosted model. Buying tip: it is still in beta, so test it on a staging wiki first.

Our take

XWiki is one of the few mature wikis you can run yourself for free and still buy professional support for, which makes it a serious Confluence replacement for sovereignty-minded teams. Start with the 30-day cloud trial or a self-hosted install, and treat the new MCP server as an experiment until it leaves beta.
