About Sync.com
Sync.com is a Canadian cloud storage provider founded in 2011 and based in Toronto that uses end-to-end, zero-knowledge encryption by default. Files are encrypted before they leave your device, so neither Sync.com nor third parties can read them, and the company positions this as a privacy-first alternative to Dropbox and Google Drive.
The service offers desktop sync for Windows and macOS, mobile apps with camera upload, a web panel, version history and file recovery, and sharing with passwords, expiry dates, download limits and notifications. Teams plans add an admin console, user management and shared team folders, and the company supports compliance needs under HIPAA, GDPR and PIPEDA, which is why healthcare practices, law firms and accountants use it. Office files can be previewed and edited online through a Microsoft Office integration. A free plan includes 5 GB, individual plans range from 1 TB to unlimited storage, and Teams plans are priced per user.
Sync.com fits privacy-minded individuals and small teams that want simple, affordable encrypted storage with compliance paperwork. Sync can be slower than mainstream services, there is no official Linux desktop client, integrations are few and real-time collaboration is limited. Tresorit is a pricier European business alternative, Proton Drive brings a similar model to the Proton ecosystem, pCloud offers lifetime plans with optional encryption, and Dropbox remains better for heavy collaboration.
