Qlik Sense

Enterprise BI with an associative engine and AI answers on top

Paid · $300BI & dashboards

Qlik Sense is a bI & dashboards tool for Enterprise and Small businesses, offered as paid ($300/mo). Founded in United States in 1993. Popular alternatives include ThoughtSpot.

About Qlik Sense

Qlik Sense is the analytics product of Qlik, a company founded in Lund, Sweden in 1993 and now headquartered in Pennsylvania, USA, under Thoma Bravo ownership since 2016. Its core job is self-service dashboards and data exploration built on the associative engine, which keeps every value in a model linked so that each click shows both related and excluded data instead of running a fixed SQL drill-down.

Today it is sold mainly as Qlik Cloud Analytics, with a client-managed edition still available for on-premise deployments. Capabilities include interactive apps and dashboards, a load-script data layer, report automation, Qlik Predict for AutoML forecasts, and Qlik Answers for conversational questions over both dashboards and documents. Cloud plans are priced by data capacity rather than seats: Starter covers 10 users and 10 GB, while Standard and higher add capacity in 25 GB packs and do not charge for additional users.

Qlik fits data teams that model data from many sources (including SAP) and want governed apps for hundreds of business users. It is heavier to learn than Power BI, whose per-user pricing is far cheaper for Microsoft shops, and less design-flexible than Tableau for visual storytelling. Small teams that only need charts over one database will find Metabase or Looker Studio simpler.

In February 2026 Qlik made its agentic experience in Qlik Cloud generally available through Qlik Answers, together with an MCP server that lets assistants such as Claude query governed Qlik data; a Discovery Agent that flags anomalies followed in the rollout.

Key features of Qlik Sense

  • Associative engine that shows related and unrelated values on every selection
  • Qlik Answers chat over dashboards, data models and unstructured documents
  • Discovery Agent that monitors key measures and surfaces anomalies
  • MCP server so third-party assistants can query governed Qlik data
  • Qlik Predict AutoML for forecasting and what-if analysis
  • Load script and data manager for joining SAP, cloud warehouses and files
  • Report automation and scheduled distribution of PDF and Excel reports
  • Cloud SaaS or client-managed deployment on your own Windows servers

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Associative exploration surfaces gaps that query-based BI tools hide
  • Capacity pricing means adding viewers on Standard costs nothing extra
  • Strong data integration heritage, including SAP and Talend connectors
  • Long track record as a Gartner Magic Quadrant Leader for analytics
  • Full 30-day trial without a credit card

Cons

  • Entry price of $300 per month billed annually is high for small teams
  • Load scripting and data modeling take real training to master
  • Visual customization is less flexible than Tableau
  • Data-capacity metering can be hard to forecast as data volumes grow

Our take

Qlik Sense is a serious enterprise BI platform whose associative engine and capacity-based pricing pay off when many users explore complex data. Shortlist it against Power BI and Tableau if you have SAP or many sources to model; skip it if a few dashboards over one database are all you need.
