Omnara
Open-source platform for running durable AI agents on any model
Omnara is a developer tools tool for Developers and Small businesses, offered as open source. Based in United States, founded in 2025. Popular alternatives include Composio, NativeShip, Windmill.
About Omnara
Omnara is an open-source managed agent platform from Omnara, a San Francisco startup in Y Combinator's Summer 2025 batch, founded by CEO Ishaan Sehgal and CTO Kartik Sarangmath. You define an agent in a short YAML config or an API call, and Omnara runs the loop, attaches machines and handles secrets, permissions and history. It is pitched as a self-hostable alternative to Claude Managed Agents and OpenAI's Agents API.
Each agent's state lives in an append-only event log in Postgres, so agents survive crashes and use no compute while idle. Tools run on any macOS or Linux machine with the outbound-only omnarad daemon or on sandboxes such as Daytona, E2B and Modal, using models from OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter or any compatible endpoint. MCP, skills, approval prompts, scoped secrets, role-based access and Slack, Discord and GitHub integrations are built in. Self-hosting is free under Apache 2.0; the cloud has no platform fee and bills managed models at provider token rates and machines by memory-hour.
It fits engineering teams that want Slack, code review or in-product agents without building a platform. Claude Managed Agents is quicker if you only use Anthropic models, and LangGraph or Mastra suit one agent built into your code. The team is small and this version is new.
On October 21, 2026 co-founder Kartik Sarangmath presented the rebuilt platform in a Show HN post that passed 100 points. Omnara first offered a phone app for remote-controlling Claude Code and Codex. Buying tip: start free with your own model keys and machines before paying for managed resources.
Key features of Omnara
- Agents created from a YAML config or a single API call
- Durable append-only event log in Postgres that survives crashes and restarts
- omnarad daemon connects any macOS or Linux machine with no inbound ports
- Machine pools from Daytona, E2B, Modal, Blaxel, Unikraft Cloud and others
- Any model via OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter or a compatible endpoint
- Per-tool permission modes with human approval for risky calls
- MCP servers, skills, custom tools and encrypted scoped secrets
- REST API, TypeScript SDK, CLI, plus Slack, Discord and GitHub integrations
Pros and cons
Pros
- Apache 2.0 code that you can self-host on one machine with Docker Compose
- No platform or per-seat fees on the hosted cloud
- Not tied to one model vendor or one sandbox provider
- Idle agents hold no worker and cost nothing in compute
- Agents can move between a laptop and a cloud sandbox mid-task
Cons
- Small four-person team and a newly rebuilt product
- Usage-based token and machine billing is harder to forecast
- Self-hosting means running Postgres, Redis, blob storage and the control plane
- The daemon supports macOS and Linux, not Windows
- SSO, audit-log setup and on-prem help sit in the Enterprise plan

Our take
Omnara is a strong choice when you need many durable agents behind an API and do not want to lock models, sandboxes or data to one vendor. Try it with your own keys and a laptop daemon first; the young team and usage billing are the main things to weigh before production use.
