Exa

Web search and content API built for AI agents and LLM apps

Exa is a developer tools tool for Developers and Enterprise, offered as freemium. Founded in United States in 2021. Popular alternatives include Cursor, RunInfra, Postman.

About Exa

Exa is a web search API for AI agents from Exa Labs Inc., a San Francisco company founded in 2021 by Will Bryk (CEO) and Jeff Wang. It runs its own crawler and index, which it says tracks over 2 trillion URLs, and returns clean results, page text and highlights an LLM can use directly. Exa reports passing $100M in annualized revenue in October 2026.

The API covers Search (lite, auto, deep-lite and deep types), Contents for full text and summaries, Agent runs for structured research and list building, Monitors and Websets. There are Python and JavaScript SDKs, a hosted MCP server, an OpenAI-compatible endpoint and LangChain, LlamaIndex and CrewAI guides. Billing is prepaid pay-as-you-go: $10 in free credits a month, Lite search at $4 and Auto at $7 per 1,000 requests, and custom Enterprise deals.

Exa fits teams building agents, RAG pipelines or research tools that need fresh web data at volume. Perplexity's Sonar API bundles search with generated answers, and You.com offers a similar search API for agents, while Exa gives finer control over retrieval. There is no flat monthly plan, so costs scale with traffic, and benchmark wins are Exa's own claims.

Exa announced Exa 3.0 on October 19, 2026, and it ranked #5 on Product Hunt on October 20. It brings a larger embedding model, the cheaper Exa Lite type, general availability of Dynamic Highlights, which use 95% fewer tokens than full pages, and 1.27B ecommerce listings plus 211M+ local businesses. Buying tip: start with Lite plus highlights and compare answer quality before paying for Auto.

Key features of Exa

  • Search API with lite, auto, deep-lite and deep types on one independent index
  • Dynamic Highlights that pass only the most relevant tokens to the model
  • Contents API for full page text, highlights and AI summaries
  • Agent API for cited research, list building and enrichment with structured output
  • Coverage of people, companies, code, papers, ecommerce listings and local businesses
  • Monitors for recurring searches and Websets for verified datasets
  • Hosted MCP server and an OpenAI-compatible endpoint
  • Python and JavaScript SDKs with LangChain, LlamaIndex and Vercel AI SDK guides

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Free $10 monthly credit grant with no card required
  • Lite search at $4 per 1,000 requests suits high-volume agents
  • Highlights cut token usage and LLM costs compared with full pages
  • SOC 2 Type II certified, with HIPAA mode and zero data retention on Enterprise
  • Wide framework and agent tool support, including MCP

Cons

  • No flat monthly plan, so spend rises directly with traffic
  • Websets API needs a separate paid Websets plan and credits
  • Benchmark leadership is reported by Exa itself
  • More than 25 results per search and custom rate limits need Enterprise
  • Requires development work; not a ready-made search app for end users

Our take

Exa is one of the strongest choices for giving agents web access, and Exa 3.0's Lite tier and highlights make it cheaper to run at scale. Use the free monthly credits to test your own queries, then budget per request rather than expecting a fixed monthly bill.
