LanguageTool
Multilingual grammar, spelling and style checker for 30+ languages
LanguageTool is a aI writing tool for Freelancers and Creators, offered as freemium ($25/mo). Founded in Germany in .
About LanguageTool
LanguageTool is a grammar, spelling and style checker that works in more than 30 languages. Daniel Naber started it in 2003 as an open-source project during his computational linguistics studies in Germany, and it became a business when he teamed up with Christopher Blum through LanguageTooler GmbH in Potsdam. In April 2023 it was acquired by Learneo, the US education company that also owns QuillBot.
It runs as browser extensions, desktop apps for macOS and Windows, add-ins for Microsoft Word, Outlook and Google Docs, and an online editor. Since spring 2026 the browser extension requires Premium, so the free Basic plan mainly covers core checks in the web editor, up to 2,000 characters per text. Premium raises the limit to 150,000 characters per check, unlocks thousands of extra style and grammar rules for English, German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Polish and Portuguese, and adds unlimited paraphrasing and a personal style guide. Team plans add user management and a shared dictionary and style guide.
LanguageTool fits people who write in several European languages and want one checker for all of them. Its English suggestions are less extensive than Grammarly's, and it lacks Grammarly's tone and generative features. QuillBot is stronger for paraphrasing and Wordtune for rewriting whole sentences, but neither matches LanguageTool's language range.
A practical tip: the open-source engine can be self-hosted for privacy-sensitive use, though without Premium's extra rules. Premium costs $24.90 monthly or $69.90 yearly, with a 14-day trial and a 14-day money-back guarantee.
