Dynatrace
AI-driven observability and app security for large cloud estates
Dynatrace is a uptime & monitoring tool for Enterprise and Developers, offered as paid. Founded in United States in 2005.
About Dynatrace
Dynatrace is an enterprise observability platform that monitors applications, infrastructure, logs, user experience and runtime security from one data store. It began in 2005 as dynaTrace software in Linz, Austria, and has traded on the NYSE since 2019, with headquarters now in the United States. Its core job is pinpointing which service or dependency caused an incident.
The platform rests on OneAgent, a single agent that auto-instruments hosts, containers and code; Smartscape, a live dependency map; Grail, a data lakehouse queried with DQL; and a causal AI engine that groups alerts into root-cause problems. Pricing is a rate card drawn down from an annual commitment: about $29 per host per month for infrastructure monitoring, $58 per 8 GiB host for full-stack APM, plus usage fees for logs, traces and user sessions.
Dynatrace suits large enterprises with hybrid or Kubernetes estates that want automatic discovery and fewer noisy alerts. It is heavy for a startup with a few services, and the consumption model needs careful forecasting. Datadog is easier to adopt piecemeal, New Relic offers a free tier with user-based pricing, and Grafana Cloud suits teams that prefer open-source Prometheus and OpenTelemetry tooling.
In early 2026 Dynatrace launched Dynatrace Intelligence, which it calls an agentic operations system: it combines its deterministic causal AI with agents that can investigate and act within guardrails for SRE, development and security teams. Before buying, run the 15-day trial on a production-like cluster to estimate host-hours and log volume.
Key features of Dynatrace
- OneAgent auto-instruments hosts, containers, processes and code with one install
- Smartscape topology map of live service and infrastructure dependencies
- Grail data lakehouse for logs, metrics, traces and events queried with DQL
- Causal AI that collapses alert storms into a single root-cause problem
- Real user monitoring with session replay and synthetic browser checks
- Runtime vulnerability analytics and application protection on monitored hosts
- Dynatrace Intelligence agents for SRE, developer and security workflows
- Kubernetes platform monitoring included at no charge on Full-Stack hosts
Pros and cons
Pros
- Automatic discovery and instrumentation save weeks of manual setup
- Root-cause analysis cuts alert noise better than threshold-based tools
- One platform covers APM, infrastructure, logs, RUM and runtime security
- Public rate card with per-hour billing and no penalty-style overages
- Strong fit for hybrid estates mixing mainframe, VMs and Kubernetes
Cons
- Requires an annual spend commitment, so not suited to small teams
- Consumption pricing across many meters is hard to forecast
- DQL and the platform's breadth take real time to learn
- Interface spans classic and new apps, which can feel inconsistent
- Agentic AI calls through workflows and APIs are billed per AI unit

Common use cases
- 1Monitoring microservices on Kubernetes with automatic dependency mapping
- 2Finding the root cause of production incidents across many teams
- 3Tracking real user experience and conversion on customer-facing apps
- 4Detecting exploitable vulnerabilities in running code libraries
- 5Consolidating several monitoring tools into one enterprise platform
- 6Feeding observability data into automated remediation workflows
Best for
Large enterprises running complex hybrid or Kubernetes environments that want automatic instrumentation and AI root-cause analysis.
Not ideal for
Startups and small teams that need a cheap, self-serve monitoring tool (Datadog, New Relic or Grafana Cloud are easier entry points).
Integrations
- AWS
- Microsoft Azure
- Google Cloud
- Kubernetes
- OpenTelemetry
- ServiceNow
- Slack
- Jira
Our take
Dynatrace is one of the most capable observability platforms for big, messy estates, and its automation genuinely reduces operational toil. Pick it if you have the budget and scale to justify an annual commitment; smaller teams will get more value faster from Datadog or Grafana.
