About Discourse

Discourse is open-source discussion software created in 2013 by Jeff Atwood, co-founder of Stack Overflow, together with Robin Ward and Sam Saffron. It powers forums for developer tools, open-source projects, games and SaaS products, and it is built to make long-lived community knowledge easy to find, both through its own search and in search engines.

Topics are organized by categories and tags, with infinite scrolling, likes, accepted solutions and rich notifications. A trust level system gradually grants privileges to engaged members, spreading moderation work across the community, while staff get flagging, review queues, spam controls and SSO with an existing account system. Real-time chat channels, a full API, webhooks, hundreds of plugins and themes, and Discourse AI features such as topic summaries, semantic search and related topics extend the core. The software is free under the GPL for self-hosting with the official Docker setup, and the company sells managed hosting tiers that differ mainly by staff seats, traffic and available plugins.

Discourse suits companies and projects that want support deflection and durable, indexable answers rather than chat that scrolls away. Discord feels more immediate for casual real-time communities, Circle bundles courses and paid memberships for creators, and Flarum is a lighter open-source forum. Self-hosting is cheap but needs regular upgrades, and hosted plans become costly for large communities.
