About Stoplight

Stoplight is an API design, documentation and governance platform, founded in Austin, Texas, and acquired by SmartBear in 2023. It serves API-first organizations that design APIs before writing code, so teams agree on contracts early and keep documentation, mocks and implementations in sync.

Stoplight Studio provides a visual OpenAPI editor that lets people design endpoints, models and examples without hand-writing YAML, with Git sync to keep specs in repositories. Prism, its open-source mock server, generates mock APIs from specs so frontend and backend teams can work in parallel. Spectral, Stoplight's widely used open-source linter, enforces API style guides automatically, and Stoplight's governance features apply shared rules across teams and projects. Hosted documentation with interactive try-it consoles and reusable shared components round out the platform. A free plan covers individuals, while team plans add more users, projects, private docs and governance features.

Stoplight fits organizations with several API teams that need consistent design and governance. Paid tiers are expensive for small teams, and since the SmartBear acquisition some customers have been uncertain about how it will evolve alongside SwaggerHub. Postman is the broader API platform for testing and collaboration, SwaggerHub is SmartBear's other design tool, and Redocly, Bump.sh and Mintlify are popular for documentation. Spectral and Prism remain useful on their own even if you do not use the hosted platform.
