Docusaurus

Static docs sites built with React

Docusaurus is a aPI & developer docs tool for Developers, offered as open source. Founded in United States in 2017.

About Docusaurus

Docusaurus is an open-source static site generator for documentation, created and maintained by Meta's open-source team and released under the MIT license. You write pages in Markdown or MDX, which lets you embed React components inside docs, and Docusaurus builds a fast static website with navigation, sidebars, a blog and search that you can host on GitHub Pages, Netlify, Vercel or any static host.

Key features are document versioning, so each product release keeps its own docs, built-in internationalisation for translated sites, a plugin system, swizzling to override theme components, and Algolia DocSearch integration, which is free for qualifying open-source projects. Version 3 moved to MDX 3 and React 18. There is no paid tier: the real cost is the developer time needed to set up, design, host and maintain the site. It powers documentation for projects such as React Native, Jest and Redux.

Docusaurus fits engineering teams and open-source projects that want docs-as-code in Git with full control over design. It is weaker for non-technical writers, who must edit Markdown files and open pull requests, and it lacks hosted analytics, AI answers and a visual editor. GitBook and Mintlify are hosted alternatives with visual editing and AI features, MkDocs with the Material theme is the Python-world equivalent, and Starlight from Astro and Nextra are newer static options.
