DeepL

DeepL is a machine translation service from DeepL, a company based in Cologne, Germany, that grew out of the Linguee online dictionary and launched its translator in 2017. It is known for output that reads more naturally and keeps nuance better than many competitors, especially for European languages, and it supports Turkish among its 30+ languages.

Users translate text in the browser, desktop and mobile apps, or whole documents such as Word, PowerPoint and PDF files while keeping their formatting. Glossaries enforce company terminology, formality settings switch between formal and informal tone in languages that distinguish them, and DeepL Write rephrases and corrects text to improve grammar and style. DeepL Voice brings real-time speech translation to conversations and meetings. Businesses integrate the DeepL API into websites, apps, CMSs and support tools, and many localization platforms such as Crowdin, Lokalise and Weglot use DeepL as a translation engine. A free tier has character and document limits, while the per-user Individual, Team and Business plans raise character and file limits and add CAT tool integration and data security guarantees.

DeepL fits professionals, translators and companies that need high-quality drafts quickly, particularly in Europe where its German base and data handling help with compliance. Its language coverage remains narrower than Google Translate, which is better for rare languages and free large-scale use. Large language models are now a serious alternative for context-aware translation.

POEditor

POEditor is a web-based translation management system for software teams that need to localize apps, websites, games and marketing copy. It has been online since 2012, is run by Code Whale Inc., and says more than 4,000 customers use it. The workflow: import language files, let translators and volunteers work in a shared editor, then push finished translations back to the codebase.

The editor handles common formats such as Gettext PO/POT, JSON and i18next JSON, Flutter ARB, CSV and INI, plus mobile and XLIFF formats. Translation memory, glossaries, comments, tags and quality checks keep wording consistent. Automatic translation can use Google, Azure AI Translator or DeepL, and AI providers including OpenAI, Claude, Gemini and Amazon Bedrock can be connected. Pricing is based on the number of strings rather than seats: a free plan covers 1,000 strings, and paid plans run from Start to Enterprise.

POEditor suits small and mid-size product teams and open-source projects that want a cheap, low-ceremony way to crowdsource or manage translations. It is less polished for design-led workflows than Lokalise, has fewer enterprise workflow and vendor-management features than Phrase or Crowdin, and Localazy offers a more automated developer CLI experience.

Buying tip: estimate your string count across all target languages before picking a plan, because that number, not the size of your team, drives the price. The 10-day trial of paid features starts automatically with your first project, and every account gets 10,000 free automatic-translation characters.
