Deel
Deel is a global HR and payroll platform founded in San Francisco in 2019 by Alex Bouaziz and Shuo Wang. It lets companies hire contractors and full-time employees in more than 150 countries, either through Deel's own employer of record (EOR) entities, where Deel legally employs the worker on your behalf, or through payroll for entities you already own.
The product is modular. Contractor management handles localized contracts, invoices and payouts in many currencies; EOR covers employment contracts, benefits, taxes and statutory filings; Global Payroll consolidates payroll for your own entities; and Deel HR is an HRIS with org charts, time off and documents. Add-ons cover immigration and visa support, equipment provisioning, IT management and engagement tools. Contractor, EOR, payroll and HR modules are each priced per worker per month.
Deel suits remote-first startups and scale-ups hiring across many countries, including Turkey, where it can employ staff without a local company. EOR is expensive per employee, so companies often open their own entity once headcount in one country grows. Support quality varies by country, and the breadth of modules adds complexity. Remote.com and Oyster are direct EOR rivals, Rippling is stronger when US payroll and IT are central, and Gusto is simpler for US-only teams.
Lever
Lever is a recruiting platform that combines an applicant tracking system with candidate relationship management, sold together as LeverTRM. Founded in San Francisco in 2012, it became part of Employ Inc. in 2022 alongside Jobvite and JazzHR, and it is used mainly by mid-size companies with in-house recruiting teams.
The product lets recruiters manage active job pipelines and nurture passive candidates in the same database: a browser extension captures profiles from LinkedIn and other sites, nurture campaigns send personalized email sequences, and past applicants such as silver medalists can be rediscovered for new roles. Interview scheduling, structured feedback forms, offer approvals and reporting support the hiring process, with native Gmail, Outlook and calendar sync and integrations with HRIS systems and job boards. Pricing is quote-based, and capabilities such as advanced analytics, nurture and onboarding are sold as add-ons.
Lever fits sourcing-heavy recruiting teams at companies with roughly a hundred to a few thousand employees that value having CRM and ATS in one tool. Product innovation has slowed since the Employ consolidation, and its analytics trail Ashby. Greenhouse is stronger on structured hiring and has a bigger integration marketplace, Ashby leads on analytics and automation, and SMB-oriented tools such as Workable or Teamtailor are simpler and more transparently priced for smaller companies.
