Microsoft Copilot
Microsoft Copilot is the umbrella name for Microsoft's AI assistants. The free Copilot app runs on Windows, Edge, iOS, Android and the web with chat, image generation and web-grounded answers, while Microsoft 365 Copilot is the paid business add-on that works inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams and is grounded in an organization's emails, files, chats and meetings through Microsoft Graph.
In business tenants it drafts and rewrites documents, analyzes spreadsheets in natural language, builds presentations from existing files, summarizes long email threads and produces Teams meeting recaps with action items, all within existing permissions and enterprise data protection. Copilot Studio lets organizations build custom agents connected to internal systems and data. Packaging is layered: the free consumer Copilot, Copilot inside Microsoft 365 Personal, Family and Premium subscriptions, free Copilot Chat for business users, and the per-user Microsoft 365 Copilot license.
For companies standardized on Microsoft 365 it is the most natural enterprise assistant, but the add-on is expensive, results depend on clean permissions and well-organized SharePoint content, and quality varies between apps. Google Workspace teams will get more from Gemini, and individuals who mainly want a strong general assistant often prefer ChatGPT or Claude. Most organizations run a pilot group, measure real usage and then license only the roles that benefit most.
Grok
Grok is the AI assistant built by xAI, the company Elon Musk founded in March 2023. It launched in November 2023 for X Premium users and now runs as a standalone app on the web, iOS and Android, inside X and in Tesla cars. xAI merged with X in March 2025, was acquired by SpaceX in February 2026 and now operates as SpaceX's AI division; in June 2026 SpaceX also agreed to buy Cursor maker Anysphere.
Grok's edge is real-time access to posts on X alongside web search. It offers DeepSearch research reports, reasoning modes, voice conversations, Grok Imagine for images and short videos, Grok Build for terminal coding and Grok Bot agents. xAI ships model updates monthly; Grok 4.7 arrived in September 2026. Since October 2026 paid access comes through The X Subscription: a free tier, then Plus, Premium, Super and Ultra plans that share one usage pool across Grok, Cursor and X Premium features.
Grok suits heavy X users, people who want fast takes on breaking news, and developers already on Cursor. ChatGPT has a broader feature set and ecosystem, Claude is generally preferred for long documents and careful writing, Gemini fits Google Workspace users, and Perplexity is stronger for cited research.
Grok has a record of moderation failures: antisemitic posts in July 2025, insulting replies about Turkish leaders that led an Ankara court to block some Grok content the same month, and image abuse controversies in early 2026. Existing SuperGrok subscribers keep their plans, and third-party models such as Claude or GPT in Cursor need separately billed usage credits.
