Clay
Clay is a go-to-market data platform from a New York company that works like a spreadsheet for prospecting and enrichment. You import or source lists of companies and people, and each column can call an external data provider, an AI agent or a formula, so a row fills itself with firmographics, contact details, technology data and custom research.
Its best-known feature is waterfall enrichment: Clay queries more than 100 providers in sequence until one returns, for example, a verified email, and you spend credits only on results. Claygent is an AI research agent that visits websites and answers custom questions, such as whether a company sells to enterprises or has a free trial. Signals track job changes, hiring and funding, and results sync to CRMs such as HubSpot and Salesforce and to sequencing tools. Plans are tiered by monthly credits, starting with a limited free plan, and credit consumption is the main cost driver.
Clay fits revenue operations teams, outbound sales teams and agencies that work at volume and can invest time in building tables. The learning curve is real, poorly designed tables burn credits, and for a simple lead list it is overkill. Apollo combines a contact database with sequencing in a simpler package, ZoomInfo is the enterprise data incumbent, and Cognism is strong for European contact data. An ecosystem of Clay agencies and consultants has grown around the product because setup skill matters so much.
Woodpecker
Woodpecker is a cold email and outbound automation tool built by Woodpecker.co, a Polish company listed on Warsaw's NewConnect market. It has been around since 2015 and focuses on one job: sending personalised cold email sequences from your own mailboxes while keeping them out of spam folders, then stopping follow-ups automatically when a prospect replies.
Campaigns can branch on opens, clicks and replies, and the deliverability toolkit includes free warm-up, inbox rotation, adaptive sending that respects mailbox limits, email verification with catch-all checks, a domain audit and a Deliverability Monitor. Pricing is unusual: you pay for contacted prospects per month (500, 2,000, 10,000 and up), while email accounts and team members are unlimited. LinkedIn steps, the Agency Panel, extra warm-ups and the integrations/API bundle are paid add-ons.
Woodpecker suits B2B teams and agencies that send to a few thousand well-researched prospects a month and care about inbox placement more than volume. High-volume senders usually get more for less from Instantly or Smartlead with flat unlimited-contact plans, while lemlist offers richer personalisation and multichannel steps out of the box.
Recent additions include an MCP server and a CLI that let AI assistants such as Claude Code run campaigns, and Woodpecker can buy pre-configured domains and mailboxes for you. Budget the $20/month integrations add-on if you need HubSpot, Pipedrive or API access.
