Character.AI

Character.AI is a consumer chat app where users talk with AI characters created by the community or by themselves. It was founded in 2021 by former Google researchers Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, who had worked on Google's conversational models. In 2024 Google signed a licensing agreement with the company and rehired both founders, while Character.AI continued as an independent product.

Characters range from fictional and historical figures to tutors, language partners, game masters and original personas. Anyone can create a character by writing a description, a greeting and example dialogue, and users can hold one-to-one or group chats, talk to characters by voice, and share their creations. The core service is free, and the c.ai+ subscription adds priority access, faster responses and extra features for a monthly fee.

The audience is large and young, which has made safety the central issue. After lawsuits and criticism over interactions with minors, the company introduced a separate model for teenagers, parental insight features and time-spent notifications, and in late 2025 it announced it would end open-ended chats for users under 18. Character.AI is an entertainment and role-play product rather than a productivity tool: for work, research or writing, general assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini are far better suited, and for companion-style chat, Replika and Talkie are the closest alternatives. Parents should treat it as a social platform and review its age policies.

Kore.ai

Kore.ai is an enterprise conversational and agentic AI platform headquartered in Orlando, Florida. It was founded in 2014 by Raj Koneru and in January 2024 raised a $150 million strategic round led by FTV Capital, with NVIDIA participating. Its core job is to let large companies build, govern and run AI agents that answer customers and employees across voice and digital channels, connected to back-office systems.

Artemis, the platform generation launched in May 2026, combines ABL (a typed language for defining agent behavior, tools, guardrails and handoffs), ARCH (an AI architect that turns plain-language intent into an agent system), Autoloop (goal-based optimization) and StateTrace (execution tracing). On top sit packaged products: AI for Service (voice and digital agents, agent assist, quality management and an AI-native contact center) and AI for Work (enterprise search plus HR, IT and recruiting agents). Pricing is not published; deals are quoted after a demo; a Proof Concierge pilot is offered.

Kore.ai fits banks, insurers, healthcare, telecom and retail groups that need compliance (SOC, HIPAA, PCI DSS, GDPR), voice plus chat, and deep back-office integration. It is too heavy and expensive for SMBs. Ada and Intercom Fin are faster to launch for digital support, Yellow.ai is strong in Asia and emerging markets, and Botpress suits developer teams wanting an open, cheaper builder.

Recent development: in July 2026 Kore.ai was named a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Conversational AI Platforms for the fourth straight time.
