Census
Census is a reverse ETL and data activation platform founded in San Francisco in 2018 and acquired by Fivetran in 2025. It syncs modeled data from cloud warehouses such as Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks and Redshift into the business tools teams use every day, including Salesforce, HubSpot, Braze, Marketo and ad platforms, so that sales, marketing and support act on the same numbers as the data team.
Beyond plain syncs, Census offers Audience Hub, a visual segment builder for marketers, entity resolution to unify customer identities in the warehouse, observability with alerts and sync history, and tight dbt integration so models can be synced directly. More than 200 destinations are supported. Pricing now follows the Fivetran model: a free plan includes 3,500 monthly active rows for activations, while Standard, Enterprise and Business Critical plans are usage-based and billed on monthly active rows, so cost grows with the volume of data synced.
Census suits companies that already have a warehouse and a data team and want to activate that data without building custom pipelines. It is of little use without a warehouse, and since joining Fivetran its roadmap is increasingly tied to Fivetran's platform. Hightouch is the closest competitor and has expanded further into a composable CDP, while Segment and RudderStack combine event collection with activation.
Matillion
Matillion is a data integration and transformation platform founded in Manchester, UK in 2011 by Matthew Scullion. It started as Matillion ETL, a product installed in your own cloud, and has since moved customers to the Data Productivity Cloud, a SaaS platform for building pipelines that load data into Snowflake, Databricks or Amazon Redshift and transform it there.
Pipelines are built on a low-code canvas, with SQL and Python where needed, pre-built connectors, orchestration, a built-in Git repository and data lineage. Maia, launched in 2025, is a team of AI agents that build and maintain pipelines from natural-language prompts. Editions (Developer, Teams, Scale) differ by developer users, SSO, hybrid deployment, streaming CDC and log retention, and all usage is billed in credits consumed by task hours. Prices are not published; you buy annual credit packages from sales or through AWS, Azure and Snowflake marketplaces.
Matillion fits data teams that want ingestion and in-warehouse transformation in one visual tool. Fivetran is simpler for managed ingestion only, dbt is the code-first standard for transformation, and Airbyte is the open-source option. Its strongest support is for Snowflake, Databricks and Redshift, so teams on other warehouses should confirm connector and pushdown coverage first.
In August 2026 Girish Pancha, founder of StreamSets and former Informatica CPO, became CEO. Use the 14-day trial with 500 credits to measure real task-hour consumption before negotiating a package.
