Airbyte
Airbyte is a data integration platform founded in San Francisco in 2020 that moves data from SaaS applications, databases and files into warehouses, lakes and vector stores. Its open-source core and catalog of more than 600 connectors made it the most widely adopted alternative to closed ELT services, and its Connector Builder lets teams create a new source in hours instead of writing and maintaining custom scripts.
The platform handles full and incremental syncs, change data capture from Postgres, MySQL and SQL Server, schema change detection and normalization, and it plugs into dbt, Airflow, Dagster and Prefect for transformations and orchestration. PyAirbyte runs connectors directly inside Python notebooks and scripts. You can self-host the open-source Core edition on Docker or Kubernetes for free, use Airbyte Cloud on the credit-based Standard or Plus plans, or buy Pro and Enterprise Flex plans that add faster syncs, multiple workspaces, hybrid deployment and premium support.
Airbyte fits data teams that need breadth and control: niche sources, internal APIs, or strict data residency. Fivetran is more hands-off and its connectors are more uniformly polished, but it costs more at volume. Stitch and Hevo are simpler managed options, and Meltano appeals to engineers who want everything as code. Community connectors vary in quality, so critical pipelines deserve testing and monitoring.
The 1.0 release in 2024 focused on reliability and large-scale syncs, and AI-assisted connector generation now speeds up building sources from API documentation.
Windmill
Windmill is an open-source developer platform for scripts, workflows and internal tools, built by Windmill Labs, a startup founded by Ruben Fiszel. Its premise is that most internal automation starts as a script: you write code in Python, TypeScript, Go, Bash, SQL, PHP or other languages, and Windmill turns it into a shareable job with an auto-generated UI, permissions, logs and an API endpoint.
Scripts can be chained into flows with branches, loops, retries, approvals and error handlers, triggered by schedules, webhooks, HTTP routes, emails or message queues. An app builder creates dashboards and admin panels on top of those scripts, and a web IDE with dependency management and AI assistance speeds up development, while a CLI and git sync let teams manage everything as code. The execution engine is designed for low overhead and high throughput, which makes Windmill viable for data pipelines and background jobs. The Community edition is free to self-host; the cloud Team plan is priced per user plus compute, and Enterprise adds SSO, audit logs, SLAs and scaling features.
Windmill suits engineering and data teams that want one platform to replace a mix of cron jobs, Airflow DAGs and Retool apps. It is code-first, so non-technical users will prefer Zapier, Make or n8n, and its community is smaller than older tools. Airflow and Prefect remain more common for large data orchestration, Retool is more mature for complex UIs, and Temporal is better for long-running, durable application workflows.
