Ahrefs

Ahrefs is an SEO toolset from a Singapore-headquartered company founded in 2010 by Dmitry Gerasimenko. It is built around one of the largest live backlink indexes and a web crawler that ranks among the most active on the internet after Google's, and it is used by SEO professionals, agencies and content teams to understand why sites rank and how to compete with them.

Site Explorer shows any domain's backlinks, referring domains, organic keywords, top pages and traffic estimates; Keywords Explorer researches keywords for Google and other search engines including YouTube and Amazon; Site Audit crawls your site for technical issues, Rank Tracker monitors positions, and Content Explorer finds popular content on any topic. Newer additions such as Brand Radar track how often brands appear in AI answers and Google AI Overviews. Paid plans are tiered by users, history and limits, with usage limits on lower tiers, while free Ahrefs Webmaster Tools give site owners audits and backlink data for their own verified sites.

Ahrefs fits agencies, in-house SEO teams and content-driven companies that need reliable backlink and keyword data every day. Its prices start higher than most competitors and usage limits on lower plans frustrate heavy users. Semrush is the closest rival with stronger PPC and market research tools, SE Ranking and Mangools cover the basics for less, and Screaming Frog complements Ahrefs for deep technical crawling.

Moz Pro

Moz Pro is an SEO software suite from Moz, the Seattle company founded in 2004 as SEOmoz by Rand Fishkin and Gillian Muessig and owned by Ziff Davis since 2021. Moz created Domain Authority, a metric much of the SEO industry still uses, and says 500,000 marketers trust Moz Pro. Its core job is to help marketers find keywords, analyze backlinks, audit sites and track rankings, and now visibility in AI search.

The toolkit includes Keyword Explorer, Link Explorer, weekly site crawls with an on-page grader, desktop and mobile rank tracking, Domain and Brand Authority scores, custom reports, MozBar Premium and AI content briefs. Moz has added AI visibility dashboards that track prompts, sentiment and citations across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Perplexity. Plans scale by seats, tracked sites, keywords and query limits: Starter covers one site, Standard 3, Medium 10 and Large 25.

Moz Pro fits small in-house teams, consultants and agencies that value trusted link metrics and clean reporting. Its keyword and backlink databases are smaller than Ahrefs and Semrush, query limits on lower plans are tight and competitive research is lighter. Semrush is the broader marketing suite, Ahrefs has stronger backlink and content data, and SE Ranking is cheaper for agencies tracking many projects.

Annual billing saves 20%, taking Medium, the most popular tier, from $179 to $143 a month. Before paying, try the free Moz Community account, which gives limited access to MozBar, Keyword Explorer and Link Explorer, and budget for extra AI prompts at $50 per 100.
