Affinity Designer

Affinity Designer is a professional vector and raster design application originally built by Serif, a UK software company that Canva acquired in 2024. It is used for illustration, logos and brand identity, icons, UI mockups and print layouts, and has long been the most credible alternative to Adobe Illustrator for designers who refuse to pay a monthly subscription. The new unified Affinity app runs natively on macOS and Windows, with an iPad version announced to follow; the earlier Affinity Designer 2 also has a full iPad edition.

The core strength is the persona system: a Designer persona for precise vector work (pen, node, boolean and shape tools, symbols, artboards, constraints) and a Pixel persona for raster retouching and texture inside the same document. Performance is fast even with complex files, and it imports and exports PSD, PDF, SVG and EPS, with partial support for AI files. In late 2025 Canva merged Designer, Photo and Publisher into a single Affinity app and made it free to download, while generative AI features are tied to a Canva Pro subscription.

Affinity fits freelance designers, illustrators, small studios and students who want professional output without Adobe Creative Cloud costs. It is weaker for real-time collaboration and shared design systems, where Figma is the standard, and agencies whose clients send native Illustrator files may still hit compatibility issues. Compared with Illustrator it has a smaller plugin and tutorial ecosystem; compared with Inkscape, which is also free, it is faster and more polished, especially for print work.

Photoroom

Photoroom is an AI photo editor focused on product images, built by a Paris-based startup founded by Matthieu Rouif and Eliot Andres. The app launched in 2020, the company raised a $19M Series A and a $43M Series B, Forbes reported a $500M valuation in 2024, and Photoroom says it is profitable. Its core job is to turn a quick phone photo of a product into a clean, consistent image ready for a store, marketplace or ad.

Background removal is a core tool with no credit cost under fair use, while AI credits power AI Backgrounds, AI Fashion Models, Virtual Try-On, Product Staging, Edit with AI and a Video Generator. Batch editing, brand kits and shared Spaces support teams. Paid plans Pro, Max and Ultra differ in monthly AI credits (8,000, 25,000 and 75,000) and exports (1,000, 3,000 and 10,000), all with up to 50 seats; Max adds video and Shopify sync, Ultra adds 4K output. API and MCP usage are billed separately.

It fits online sellers, resale marketplaces and e-commerce teams producing hundreds of product images a month. It is not a general design tool, credit use varies by tool and is hard to predict, and free exports get a watermark once the monthly limit is reached. Canva is better for broad marketing design, Adobe Firefly suits Creative Cloud users who want commercially safe generation, and Recraft is stronger for vector and brand illustration.

Compare billing terms: Pro is $12.99 a month or $89.99 a year, about $7.50 a month. Photoroom also offers an MCP connector, so the editor can be driven from Claude and other AI assistants.
