Backenly

Open-source Postgres backend that coding agents build and maintain

Open source · $25Developer tools

Backenly is a developer tools tool for Developers and Small businesses, offered as open source ($25/mo). Popular alternatives include Llama App, Cursor, Lovable.

About Backenly

Backenly is an open-source backend platform built for AI coding agents, co-founded by Adarsh Chiriyamkandath Jose and Lakshmi Sunil Koonath. Your agent creates the database, auth, storage, functions and realtime features through Backenly's MCP tools, and Backenly then keeps the backend running with a self-healing loop that checks it every minute.

Each project gets its own PostgreSQL schema with pgvector, REST APIs through PostgREST, email, OAuth and magic-link auth, S3-compatible storage, realtime over SSE, cron and database triggers, and row-level security written from plain descriptions. Safe fixes such as a missing index apply on their own with snapshots and undo, while destructive or auth changes wait for human approval. Branches let an agent experiment before you merge. The platform is Apache-2.0 and the SDK, CLI and MCP server are MIT. Backenly Cloud has a Free tier, Pro at $25 a month with optional prepaid overages, and custom Enterprise.

It fits developers building apps with Claude Code, Cursor or Codex who do not want to operate a backend. Supabase offers a similar Postgres stack with a larger ecosystem, and Firebase is a mature NoSQL alternative. Backenly is far younger, and free-tier triggers, webhooks and custom domains are missing.

On October 31, 2026 Backenly launched on Product Hunt and finished #5 of the day. Buying tip: every plan includes direct Postgres connection strings and pg_dump exports, so test lock-in risk early; a launch discount on Pro runs until November 7, 2026.

Key features of Backenly

  • MCP tools that let coding agents build Postgres, auth, storage and functions
  • Self-healing loop that checks the backend every minute, with snapshots and undo
  • Human approval for destructive or auth-related changes
  • PostgREST REST APIs with OpenAPI docs for every table
  • Realtime inserts, updates, presence and broadcast over SSE
  • Row-level security policies written from plain descriptions
  • Backend branches for agent experiments with diff and merge
  • Self-hosting with Docker Compose under Apache-2.0

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Open source and self-hostable, including the autonomy engine
  • Standard Postgres with pg_dump exports on every plan
  • Self-healing and API requests are not billed on any plan
  • Risky changes cannot be approved by the agent's own key
  • Cloud regions in US East, US West, Frankfurt, Mumbai and Singapore

Cons

  • Very new platform with a small community
  • Free cloud tier lacks triggers, webhooks and custom domains
  • Pro caps (100,000 MAU, 8 GB Postgres) are hard unless you buy overages
  • Natural-language tools need your own Claude or OpenAI key when self-hosted
  • No published compliance certifications

Best for

Developers building apps with AI coding agents who want a Postgres backend the agent can create and the platform can maintain safely.

Not ideal for

Teams that need a mature ecosystem, long track record or a NoSQL model (Supabase, Firebase).

  • PostgreSQL
  • Claude Code
  • Cursor
  • Codex
  • GitHub Copilot
  • Cline
  • Zed
  • Stripe

Our take

Backenly is an interesting take on agent-built backends, and its open-source license and Postgres exports keep the risk low. Try it on a side project first and keep an eye on the approval queue before trusting it with production data.
