Jira

Jira is Atlassian's issue and project tracking product, first released in 2002 and today the most widely deployed tracker for software teams. Atlassian, founded in Sydney, Australia, now positions Jira as one product for software, business and service teams after merging Jira Work Management into Jira in 2024.

Teams plan work with scrum and kanban boards, backlogs, sprints, epics, releases and timelines. Custom issue types, fields, screens and workflows with conditions, validators and post-functions let Jira model almost any process, and JQL, its query language, powers filters, dashboards and reports such as burndown, velocity and cumulative flow. Automation rules handle repetitive work without code, and thousands of Marketplace apps add test management, time tracking and more. Premium adds Plans for cross-team roadmaps and capacity, while Rovo AI summarizes issues, writes JQL from plain language and breaks work into tasks. The cloud version is free for up to 10 users; Server ended in 2024, and Data Center stopped selling to new customers in March 2026 ahead of its end of life in March 2029.

Jira fits engineering organizations that need configurable processes, strong integrations with Confluence, Bitbucket and GitHub, and enterprise controls. Its flexibility can turn into complexity, with slow, over-customized instances and a denser interface. Linear is faster and more opinionated for product-focused startups, ClickUp and Asana are broader work management tools, and Azure DevOps or YouTrack are common alternatives in specific ecosystems.

Plane

Plane is an open-source project management and issue tracking tool founded in 2022 that sits between Jira's flexibility and Linear's simplicity. Teams organise work into issues, cycles (sprints), modules for larger initiatives and saved views, and can switch between list, kanban, calendar, spreadsheet and Gantt layouts. Pages provide built-in documentation and Intake collects requests for triage.

The Community edition is free to self-host under the AGPL with Docker or Kubernetes. Plane Cloud has a free plan for small teams and paid Pro and Business tiers per user that add time tracking, custom workflows and work item types, bulk operations, dashboards, advanced permissions, SSO and Plane AI, while Enterprise covers self-managed deployments with support and audit logs. Importers from Jira, Linear, Asana and GitHub ease migration, and an API, webhooks and Slack and GitHub integrations connect it to the rest of the stack.

Plane fits engineering and product teams who want Linear-style workflows with data ownership, a self-host option or lower per-seat prices. It is less polished than Linear, its integration ecosystem is smaller than Jira's, self-hosting requires maintenance and reporting is still maturing. Linear remains the benchmark for speed and design, Jira for enterprise reporting and marketplace apps, and Huly or OpenProject are other open-source options. The project has grown quickly, with a large GitHub following and frequent releases.
