DocHub
DocHub is a browser-based PDF editor and e-signature app. Chris Devor, who earlier built the iPhone utility maker Macroplant, launched it in October 2014, and it grew mainly through its Google Workspace Marketplace add-on, which has passed 57 million installs. In July 2022 airSlate acquired DocHub. Its core job is to open a PDF from Drive, Gmail or your computer, edit or fill it, sign it and send it out without installing desktop software.
The editor handles text edits, highlights, drawings, comments, page reordering, merging and splitting. Documents can go to several signers in a set order, with templates and an audit trail. Files can be opened from Google Drive, Gmail and Google Classroom as well as Dropbox, Box and OneDrive. The free plan shares three uses per month across core features; Basic and Pro are low-cost per-user subscriptions, and a Site License covers whole schools or companies.
DocHub fits teachers, freelancers and small teams living in Google Workspace who sign and annotate documents occasionally. It is not a full replacement for Adobe Acrobat when you need advanced PDF production or desktop editing, and its signing workflows are lighter than dedicated e-sign suites. pdfFiller has a bigger form library and signNow focuses on high-volume e-sign workflows and APIs, both from the same parent company.
Buying tip: prices are localised, so European visitors see euros instead of dollars, and annual billing cuts about 25%. Because airSlate owns three overlapping products, compare limits across DocHub, pdfFiller and signNow before you commit.
Nitro PDF
Nitro PDF is the flagship product of Nitro Software, founded in Melbourne in 2005 and now headquartered in San Francisco. Nitro listed on the ASX in 2019 and was taken private by Potentia Capital in 2023. Its pitch has always been a cheaper, Office-style alternative to Adobe Acrobat for businesses that create, edit, convert and sign PDFs every day.
The suite covers PDF creation and conversion to and from Word, Excel and PowerPoint, editing, OCR, combining and splitting, redaction, password protection and comments, plus Nitro Sign for e-signatures with audit trails, reminders and multi-document envelopes. AI tools summarize, translate and extract data from documents, and Smart Redact, released in February 2026, finds sensitive data for review before permanent removal. Plans split into PDF Standard and Plus, Sign Standard, Plus and Enterprise, and a Windows-only PDF Classic license.
Nitro fits organizations that buy PDF seats in volume and want admin controls, SSO and deployment tools without Acrobat pricing. Foxit offers a similar desktop-first editor, Smallpdf and iLovePDF are lighter browser tools for occasional tasks, and DocuSign remains deeper for complex signature workflows. Linux users and teams needing Android apps are not covered.
Buying tip: PDF Standard and Sign Standard are each listed at $15 per user per month, billed annually, so check whether you need both. Online checkout is capped at 20 licenses; larger rollouts go through sales, where volume discounts apply to the Plus and Enterprise tiers. The 14-day trial needs no credit card.
