Descript
Descript is an audio and video editor that works like a text document. It was co-founded in San Francisco by Andrew Mason, the founder of Groupon, and grew from a transcription tool into a full editor. You record or import media, Descript transcribes it, and deleting or moving words in the transcript cuts and rearranges the underlying audio and video.
The editor supports multitrack timelines, screen and webcam recording, remote recording, scenes and layouts, captions and templates. AI tools include Studio Sound, which removes noise and echo, filler word and silence removal, Eye Contact correction, green screen, AI voices and Overdub, which clones your voice to fix words after recording; that technology came from the 2019 acquisition of Lyrebird. Underlord, the AI co-editor, can perform multi-step edits, create clips, write titles and show notes, and translate or dub content from plain instructions. Plans are tiered by transcription hours, export resolution and AI usage, from a free plan with limited hours and 720p export to Hobbyist, Creator and Business, with Creator as the most balanced option.
Descript fits podcasters, educators, marketers and YouTubers whose videos are mostly spoken word. It does not replace Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or After Effects when you need detailed colour work or motion graphics, large projects can feel slow, and plan limits on AI features need watching. Riverside combines recording with text-based editing, CapCut is cheaper for short social videos, and Adobe Premiere Pro now also offers text-based editing.
Vimeo
Vimeo is a video hosting and streaming platform founded in 2004 in New York by Jake Lodwick and Zach Klein. It spent years under IAC, was spun off as a public company in 2021, and was acquired by the Italian software group Bending Spoons for about $1.38 billion in a deal completed in late 2025. Its core job is hosting video for businesses and creators in an ad-free, customizable player, with privacy controls YouTube does not offer.
Paid plans add embeddable players with your branding, password and domain-level privacy, review and approval with time-coded comments, video chapters, analytics, lead capture forms and calls to action. Advanced adds live streaming, webinars and virtual events with Q&A and polls, multistreaming and simulive. AI tools cover a script generator, automatic captions and translation sold through AI credits. A free plan allows two uploads a month; Starter, Standard and Advanced are priced per seat, and Enterprise adds SSO, SCIM and custom permissions.
Vimeo fits marketing teams, agencies, course creators and companies that need a clean, ad-free player and private sharing for client or internal video. It is weaker as a discovery channel than YouTube, Wistia goes deeper on marketing analytics, Vidyard on sales video, and Loom on quick async recordings.
Be careful with plan terms: since the Bending Spoons takeover, Vimeo has cut staff heavily (January 2026) and reports in 2026 describe accounts it classifies as business users being moved to the higher Studio tier at around $400 a month billed annually. Read the bandwidth terms first.
