Better Stack
Better Stack is an observability platform built by a Prague-based company of the same name. It started as two products, Better Uptime and Logtail, and now combines uptime monitoring, incident management, on-call scheduling, status pages and log and metrics management (Telemetry) under one account and one interface.
Monitors check HTTP endpoints, keywords, ports, DNS, SSL certificates and cron heartbeats from multiple regions, with check intervals down to 30 seconds on paid plans. Alerts go out by phone call, SMS, email, Slack and Microsoft Teams, escalate through on-call rotations, and open incidents that can update a hosted status page automatically. The telemetry side is built on ClickHouse: logs and metrics are queried with SQL, followed in live tail and turned into dashboards, with OpenTelemetry and common log shippers supported. The free plan covers 10 monitors, a status page and a small log allowance; uptime is billed as a monthly plan, while logs and metrics are usage-based per GB.
It fits startups and small to mid-size engineering teams that would otherwise pay for Pingdom, PagerDuty and Statuspage separately, and its interface is widely praised. It is not as deep as Datadog for APM, profiling and enterprise security, and PagerDuty remains more sophisticated for complex on-call and event routing. Uptime Kuma is the free self-hosted alternative for monitoring only, and Grafana Cloud is the main competitor on cost-efficient logs and metrics.
UptimeRobot
UptimeRobot is a hosted service that checks whether websites, APIs, servers and scheduled jobs are up and alerts you when they are not. It launched in 2010 as a side project of Turkish developer Umut Muhaddisoğlu, grew into one of the most widely used free monitoring tools and has been owned since late 2019 by Itrinity, the Czech and Slovak software group behind Mangools.
Monitor types cover HTTP(S), keyword, ping, port, heartbeat for cron jobs, SSL and domain expiry, DNS, UDP and API checks, with multi-location confirmation on paid plans. Alerts go to email, SMS and voice credits, mobile push and integrations such as Slack, Teams, Discord, Telegram and PagerDuty. Plans scale by monitor count and interval: Free gives 50 monitors at 5 minutes, Solo starts at 10 monitors with 60-second checks, Team adds 30-second checks and login seats, and Scale reaches 15 seconds and unlimited status pages.
It suits freelancers, agencies and SaaS teams that want simple external checks and public status pages without running their own stack. It is not an observability platform: Better Stack bundles logs and on-call, Pingdom adds real user and transaction monitoring, and self-hosted Uptime Kuma is free if you can run a server.
Important change: since late 2024 the Free plan is for non-commercial use only, so business sites need at least Solo. PayPal is no longer accepted for new subscriptions; payment is by card through Stripe or wire transfer, and there is a 14-day money-back guarantee.
