Baserow
Baserow is an open-source no-code database and one of the most complete Airtable alternatives. It is developed by a company based in the Netherlands and offered both as a hosted cloud service with EU data storage and as a self-hosted application you can run with Docker on your own servers. The core of the product is MIT licensed.
Data lives in tables with typed fields, links between tables, lookups, formulas and rollups, and can be viewed as a grid, gallery, form, kanban or calendar. On top of the database Baserow adds an application builder for simple internal tools and portals, automations, an AI field that generates or classifies content from a prompt, row comments, and a REST API with webhooks. The free self-hosted edition has no artificial row limits; paid Premium and Advanced tiers, priced per user, unlock extra views, AI, admin controls, audit logs, SSO and role management.
Baserow suits teams that like the Airtable model but need data ownership, GDPR-friendly hosting or predictable costs at large row counts. It falls short on ecosystem: Airtable has far more integrations, templates and a more mature Interfaces layer, and its community is larger. NocoDB is the closest rival, source-available rather than open source since 2026, and sits on top of an existing SQL database, while Grist is stronger for spreadsheet-style formulas. For many European organizations Baserow is the easiest open-source option to adopt.
Zoho Sheet
Zoho Sheet is the online spreadsheet in Zoho's office suite. It is built by Zoho Corporation, the privately held software company from Chennai, India, that runs more than 50 business apps from CRM to accounting. Its core job is the same as Google Sheets: create, share and edit spreadsheets in the browser with a team, with no desktop Excel license required.
The editor ships more than 350 functions, pivot tables, close to 40 chart types, conditional formatting, pick lists, checkboxes, buttons and data validation. Zia, Zoho's AI assistant, answers questions about your data in plain language, suggests charts and pivots, and writes formulas. A dedicated data cleaning tool finds duplicates, missing values and inconsistent spellings. Macros can be recorded and written in VBA, and Excel, ODS, CSV and TSV files import cleanly. The editor is free; businesses usually get it inside paid Zoho Workplace or Zoho One bundles.
Zoho Sheet fits small teams that want a capable free spreadsheet, and companies already on Zoho CRM, Books or Projects that want live data pulled into sheets. It has a much smaller template and add-on ecosystem than Google Sheets, fewer people know it, and power users of Excel will still miss Power Query and the desktop app's depth. Airtable and Grist are better if you really need a relational database rather than a grid.
A practical tip: if your company already pays for Zoho Mail or Workplace, you have Sheet at no extra cost, with cell-level locks, audit trails and version history that make it reasonable for shared finance or operations trackers.
