Basecamp
Basecamp is the project management and team communication tool made by 37signals, the Chicago company founded by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson. It is deliberately opinionated: every project gets the same toolkit of a message board, to-do lists, a schedule, docs and files, a Campfire group chat and automatic check-ins, so people always know where to find things and work stays in writing instead of scattered across chat and email.
Beyond the basics, Hill Charts show how far each piece of work has moved from figuring it out to getting it done, Lineup puts all projects on one timeline, Card Table adds a kanban board, and Timesheets track hours. Clients can be invited into projects with fine control over what they see. Pricing is flat rather than per user: a free plan covers one project, paid Freelancer, Studio and Pro plans are capped by active projects, and Unlimited covers unlimited projects and users at one fixed price, which becomes one of the cheapest options in the market once a company passes roughly twenty people.
Basecamp suits agencies, remote companies and small businesses that value calm, asynchronous communication and simple accountability. It intentionally leaves out Gantt dependencies, custom fields, resource planning and deep reporting, and its integration catalogue is thin. Asana and monday.com are better for structured planning and automations, ClickUp for teams that want every feature in one place, and Linear or Jira for engineering workflows.
Slack
Slack is the channel-based messaging platform launched in 2014 by Stewart Butterfield's team and acquired by Salesforce in 2021. It popularized organizing workplace communication into channels by team, project or topic, with threads, direct messages and shared channels that connect separate companies through Slack Connect.
Around messaging, Slack offers huddles for quick audio and video calls with screen sharing, clips, canvases for lightweight documents, lists for tracking tasks and Workflow Builder for no-code automations. Thousands of integrations bring notifications from tools such as Jira, GitHub, Google Drive and Salesforce, and apps let users act without leaving Slack. Slack AI summarizes channels and threads, searches across history and answers questions, and Salesforce's Agentforce brings AI agents into Slack. The free plan hides messages and files older than 90 days and limits integrations, which pushes active teams to Pro; Business+ adds SAML SSO, data exports and a higher uptime SLA, and Enterprise+ supports multiple workspaces, DLP and key management.
Slack fits tech companies, startups and distributed teams that rely on many integrations and fast, informal communication. Constant notifications can hurt focus, and costs add up for large organizations. Microsoft Teams wins in Microsoft 365 companies because it is bundled, Google Chat suits Workspace users, and Discord or Mattermost serve communities and teams that want self-hosting.
