Articulate 360

Articulate 360 is the e-learning authoring suite from Articulate Global, founded in 2002 by Adam Schwartz, who still leads it as CEO and executive chairman. General Atlantic invested $1.5 billion in the company in 2021. Articulate says about 125,000 organizations in 187 countries use its products, including every Fortune 100 company. The suite's core job is letting instructional designers and subject experts build interactive online courses and publish them to any LMS.

The suite includes Storyline, a Windows desktop tool for custom interactions, triggers and simulations; Rise, a browser-based builder for responsive courses; Review for stakeholder feedback; Localization for translation into 80+ languages; and Reach, a lightweight LMS for sharing and tracking. AI features cover course drafting, avatar videos, training kits, an AI tutor for learners and the Nova agent. Plans are sold per seat per year (Personal and Teams), with Frontline as an unlimited-seat, credit-based tier.

Articulate 360 fits L&D teams and freelance instructional designers who build courses regularly. It is expensive for occasional use, has no monthly billing, and Storyline needs Windows (Mac users run it through virtualization). Docebo, TalentLMS and 360Learning bundle simpler authoring inside a full LMS, which can be enough if you mainly deliver standard training.

Buying tip: Teams includes Reach for 300 active learners per year, while larger audiences need Reach 360 Pro from $3,600 per year. Translation and some AI workflows consume credits, so check the allowance during the 14-day trial.

Canvas LMS

Canvas LMS is the learning management system made by Instructure, founded in 2008 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Canvas launched in 2011 and is widely used in North American higher education and K-12. KKR and Dragoneer took it private for about $4.8 billion in November 2024. Its core job: give institutions one place for courses, assignments, grading, discussions and communication between teachers, students and parents.

Canvas includes course and module builders, assignments with SpeedGrader, quizzes (New Quizzes), rubrics and outcomes, discussions, a calendar, mastery paths and analytics. Free Student, Teacher and Parent apps cover mobile use. Extra products include Canvas Studio for video, Canvas Catalog for course storefronts, Canvas Career for skills-based and workforce learning and Mastery Connect for assessment. Hosted Canvas is sold to institutions by quote; the core code is open source under AGPLv3 on GitHub for self-hosting.

Canvas fits universities, school districts and training organisations that want a modern, widely supported LMS with a large LTI app ecosystem. For corporate training, Docebo, TalentLMS and 360Learning offer stronger compliance and HR integrations.

Two recent developments matter. IgniteAI adds AI-assisted rubrics and feedback, discussion insights, real-time translation and an agent that takes actions such as building modules. In late April 2026 Canvas suffered a breach claimed by the ShinyHunters group, followed by an outage in early May. Individual teachers can use Canvas Lite, a free account that needs no institutional license.
