Appsmith
Appsmith is an open-source low-code platform for building internal tools, created by a company with roots in Bangalore and San Francisco. Developers drag widgets such as tables, forms, charts and modals onto a canvas, connect them to databases and APIs, and write JavaScript anywhere for logic and data transformation. The result is admin panels, dashboards and approval apps built in hours instead of weeks.
The Community edition is open source and free to self-host with Docker or Kubernetes, which makes it attractive for teams with data residency or compliance requirements. The cloud Free plan suits small teams, while the per-user Business plan adds granular access control, Git-based version control with branching, workflows, audit logs and environments. Enterprise adds SSO, SCIM and dedicated support. Connectors cover Postgres, MySQL, MongoDB, REST, GraphQL, Google Sheets and many SaaS APIs, and AI features help generate queries and integrate LLMs into apps.
Appsmith is a strong fit for engineering teams that want Retool-style speed without vendor lock-in or per-seat costs that explode across large internal audiences. It has fewer components and a less polished UI than Retool, and self-hosting means you own upgrades and uptime. Budibase and ToolJet are the other open-source options; Retool remains the reference for polish and ecosystem.
Memberstack
Memberstack is a membership and authentication layer for websites built without a traditional backend. It was founded in 2018 by Tyler Bell and Duncan Hamra, went through Y Combinator's Summer 2020 batch, and runs as a small, fully remote US company. Its core job is to turn a static site, most often built in Webflow, into a members area with sign-ups, logins, paid plans and locked content.
You add a script tag and data attributes, then configure plans in a dashboard. Memberstack handles email and password, passwordless codes and social logins, Stripe subscriptions, one-time payments and trials, gated pages or elements, custom member fields, data tables for structured content and built-in member email campaigns. It works with Webflow, WordPress, React and any site where you can add a script. All plans include every feature; tiers differ by member limit and the transaction fee on paid sign-ups, from 4% on Basic down to 0% on Established.
Memberstack suits Webflow designers, agencies and creators selling courses, communities, directories or gated resources. Memberful is simpler for publishers and podcasts, Podia and Kajabi bundle hosting for courses, and Patreon brings an audience but takes a larger cut. Memberstack keeps you in control of design and Stripe, but you still build the front end yourself.
Buying tip: you can build on a test site for free with no time limit and pay only when you go live. Live member counts include free members, and Basic and Professional upgrade automatically at the limit, so model your free sign-ups too.
